Trust in him at all times, O people;
pour out your heart before him;
God is a refuge for us. Selah (Psalms 62:8)
Here is comfort and hope for all of God’s people, especially those enduring hardship. David was facing affliction when he wrote this Psalm, as seen in verses three and four:
How long will all of you attack a man to batter him,
like a leaning wall, a tottering fence?
They only plan to thrust him down from his high position.
They take pleasure in falsehood.
They bless with their mouths, but inwardly they curse. Selah (Psalm 62:3-4)
In his distress, David preached truth to himself (vv. 1-2, 5-7), then in verse eight he addressed all of God’s people. Here are three observations from Psalm 62:8.
First, David calls for God’s people to always trust in God. When times are good, we must trust in the Lord. When times are bad, we must trust in the Lord. We must trust in God at all times, in all places, and in all circumstances.
Second, David commands us to pour our hearts out to God. This is a delight for God’s people. God cares about what is on my heart? God wants me to bring everything I am carrying in my heart and pour it out in front of Him? All my fears, all my temptations, all my troubles, all my sins? God wants all that pour out before Him? Yes! Pour out everything in your heart before God. He will hear. He cares. Hold nothing back from Him.
Third, David reminds us of God’s character. “God is a refuge for us.” God is not only secure; He is a place of security for His people. God is not only strong; God uses His strength to protect His people. Not only is He a God whom we can trust and pour our hearts before, but He is a place of protection for all who trust Him. Run into Him and find an almighty, never-changing safety.
