Standing on the Promises – Psalm 55:22

“Cast your burden on the Lord, and he will sustain you; he will never permit the righteous to be moved.” (Psalm 55:22)

Note the invitation of this verse: ” Cast your burden on the Lord…” This is a command. It is a command that must be obeyed in order to experience the promise in the next half of the verse. However, it is not a command of drudgery but delight. It is a command from God’s very heart. It is an invitation to find relief from all our burden. It is an invitation to find rest. It is an invitation to take all the weight of every burden we face, throw it onto the Lord’s shoulders, and have Him carry it.

I hear the Lord Jesus’ invitation: “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28). I also hear Peter’s invitation: “…casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you” (1 Peter 5:7).

The Lord is strong and gracious enough to carry our burdens. Whatever the need, the Creator of heaven and earth will not grow weary under its weight. It will not be a burden for Him. The Lord who graciously stooped down to purchase our redemption at the cross will graciously stoop down to give us relief.

Not only will He carry our burdens, but He will sustain us in difficulty. He will provide us with strength and perseverance. He may not remove us from the presence of difficulty but He will sustain us through it.

I again hear the echoes of other passages. “But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness'” (2 Corinthians 12:9a). “Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might” (Ephesians 6:10).

The Lord will sustain us forever and in all difficulty. “… he will never permit the righteous to be moved” (Psalm 55:22b). No difficulty will ultimately harm or defeat the child of God. Our Father will never permit us to be lost.

This is an unshakeable promise on the firm foundation of the Lord Jesus in whom all the promises of God find their “Yes!” (2 Corinthians 1:20). We are urged to cast our burden on the Lord. He promises to sustain us and keep us forever.
