Have you ever felt homesick? Anyone who has been away from home has felt it. Maybe it was that first time you went to camp or the first few days in a dorm that you really felt the ache of being away for the first time. Likely, you have experienced homesickness more than once.
But what about experiencing homesickness at home? What about the ache deep inside when you are sitting on your own couch? What about feeling like you need to go home when you are already home? Have you ever felt like you needed to go home but couldn’t even put your finger on where home was?
If homesickness doesn’t resonate with you,, maybe this will: have you ever had a deep longing in your soul that you knew nothing in this world could satisfy. You have all you need, most of what you want, and no amount of stuff or experiences will make this longing go away.
C.S. Lewis said, “If we find ourselves with a desire that nothing in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that we were made for another world.”
“…here we have no lasting city, but we seek the city that is to come” (Hebrews 13:14).
“And I saw no temple in the city, for its temple is the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb. And the city has no need of sun or moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and its lamp is the Lamb” (Revelation 21:22-23).
Followers of Jesus, we are not home yet.
