As I read many news headlines and social media posts this thought from Romans 1 keeps echoing in my mind: “Claiming to be wise, they became fools…” (Romans 1:22).
The depravity of mankind’s thinking and actions is disturbing. Men and women are trying to redefine love and marriage. Women are being encouraged to murder their unborn children. Parents are encouraged to take their children to drag events and pagan festivals.
This is said to be wise, but “they have rejected the word of the LORD, so what wisdom is in them?”(Jeremiah 8:9b).
God is love, so love cannot be redefined any more than God can change (1 John 4:8; Malachi 3:6a). God has defined marriage as the covenantal union of one biological male and one biological female until death (Genesis 1:26-27, 2:18-24; Malachi 2:14; Mark 10:7-9; Romans 7:2). Since God created gender and marriage anything that rebels against his standard is foolish and sinful. Such rebellion has serious consequences attached to it (Romans 1:26-32). Since the biblical God is the only God, worshiping anything else is idolatry and treason against the God who made us and sustains us (Exodus 20:1-6; Isaiah 44:6, 45:21-22, 46:9-10).
Indeed, as I mentioned before, “they have rejected the word of the LORD, so what wisdom is in them?”(Jeremiah 8:9b).
How should followers of the Lord Jesus respond to the world’s folly?
We must remember that the answer to the world’s foolishness is not more legislation. Evil hearts will pursue evil no matter what laws stand in their way (Romans 3:9-18). Human trafficking and school shootings make this evident.
The solution to the madness of our world is new life. People need new hearts and transformation (Ezekiel 36:26). Sinners need regeneration (new birth) from the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 2:1-10; 1 Peter 1:3). Those in bondage to Satan need to be saved (Colossians 1:13-14).
The power of God to save all who believe is the Gospel (Romans 1:16-17). The Good News of Jesus needs to be proclaimed in this broken world. Christ has died in the place of sinners and risen again (Isaiah 53:5; 1 Corinthians 15:1-11). All who believe in him are saved, transformed, returned to God, and will be with him forever (John 3:16-18).
Christ is the wisdom of God that saves men and women from their condemning foolishness (1 Corinthians 1:22-24).
May we faithfully and lovingly proclaim the Good News of Christ crucified.
