Your Testimony Is Not Boring

I have talked to several believers who tell me that their testimony is boring.

“I grew up going to church. I never really got into too much trouble. I didn’t need to be convinced that Christianity is true. I was just sitting in Sunday School class one day and really believed that I was a sinner, understood that the Lord Jesus died for me, and I trusted in him. My testimony is not too exciting.”

In these moments I typically find myself smiling. I will often say something like, “God made you alive when you were spiritually dead. He resurrected you. He gave you spiritual sight to see that Jesus is Lord. He enabled you to believe that Jesus died for you. How is that boring? You have an amazing story to tell!”

Any time a believer claims to have a boring testimony it is evidence that they have an incomplete understanding of spiritual death apart from Christ and God’s work to save sinners.

Every time the Father rescues someone from the domain of darkness and transfers them to the kingdom of his beloved Son, a miracle takes place (Colossians 1:13-14). Every time someone believes in the Lord Jesus Christ, it is the result of God’s work of making them alive together with Christ by his grace; it is a spiritual resurrection (Ephesians 2:4-10). Whenever someone confesses that Jesus Christ is Lord, it is the fruit of the Holy Spirit’s work in their hearts (1 Corinthians 12:3). Any time someone comes to Christ, it is because God the Father has drawn them (John 6:44). Every time a sinner repents it has been granted to them by God and all of heaven rejoices (Acts 11:18; Luke 15:7, 10).

There are no boring conversion testimonies when we truly understand the Bible’s teaching about conversion. Each conversion is a work of God’s grace to make dead sinners come to life to believe on the Lord Jesus Christ.

Your testimony is not boring. You have an amazing story to tell!
