For Your Growth In Grace – July 7, 2024

The following is a list of recommended resources intended to help you in your walk with the Lord. These are resources that have helped me. Some came from the past week. Others were helpful in the past. All of them have helped me grow in grace.

Articles

  • “Poetry As A Means of Grace” by Jim Orrick. This is an excellent article from Christ Over All. To whet your appetite, here is a quote from the first paragraph: “Poetry is probably not the fastest way to communicate propositional truth, but it is possible that merely learning propositional truth is not the goal.”
  • It’s OK To Be a Two-Talent Christian” by Tim Challies. It’s ok to be average as long as you are faithful.
  • “How to Discover and Deploy Your Gifts” from Tim Challies, quoting Sinclair Ferguson. This article is mainly a large quotation from Sinclair Ferguson’s book Maturity (see book recommendation below).

Podcasts

  • The Hard Work of Preaching by HB Charles Jr. This is an excellent explanation of the hard work involved in sermon preparation and delivery. I recommend this for preachers, but I also recommend it for all believers. Preachers should strive for this in our preaching, and the saints should accept no less!

Books

  • John G. Paton: Missionary to the Cannibals of the South Seas by Paul Schlehlein, published by The Banner of Truth Trust. You can get your copy here. When I first read this biography, I was much newer to the ministry and on the edge of burnout. I was closer to meltdown. I had the blessing of meeting the author, Paul Schlehlein, over breakfast. He and my wife grew up in the same local church where my in-laws are still members. Paul and his family serve as missionaries in South Africa. He was visiting my in-laws church during one of our visits, and he agreed to meet with me. He gave me a signed copy of his book. I read it over two days and received great encouragement to persevere from a man who persevered in a far more difficult ministry. Brother Paul, if you happen to read this, thank you!
  • Maturity by Sinclair Ferguson, published by Banner of Truth. Get your copy here. The subtitle says it all: Growing Up and Going On In the Christian Life.

Songs

Video

  • A video on the Lord’s Prayer by John Piper and Desiring God.

Last Week on Bible Living Blog

  • “Faith: Trusting the One Who Knows Everything”: “We don’t know everything. We don’t know a lot of things. We don’t even know the greatness of our own lack of knowledge. That’s why we must trust the Lord. We must trust the One who knows everything.”
  • “Election Year Reminder – Jesus Reigns”: “Let’s not lose perspective. Let’s not forget who the eternal King is… In this election year, and for all eternity, the Lord Jesus Christ reigns.”
  • “A Brief Theology of Suffering”: “I am revisiting these truths as I grieve my Dad’s passing. I pray this can help fellow sufferers and those ministering to those who are suffering.”

From the Archives

  • You Can’t Out Imagine God – August 2, 2022 – God is not only able to do what we ask, but He is able to do far more abundantly than we ask (Ephesians 3:20-21).
