When iniquities prevail against me,
you atone for our transgressions.
Psalm 65:3
Father,
We know what it is like to be overwhelmed with our iniquities and sins. This has been part of your gracious way to bring us into the Kingdom of your Beloved Son. By your Spirit, you gave us life, opened our blind eyes to see the greatness and severity of our sins, showed us that our sin deserves eternal punishment, broke our hearts with repentance, and caused us to look to your Son who died in our place for our sins. This was truly merciful and gracious. You broke us that we might come to Christ for healing.
We are still overwhelmed by our sins. Every day we see more-and-more sin in our own lives. Some days we are cold to this. Other days we weep over the sinfulness of our sin. Still, at other times, we fall into despair believing the lie that there is no hope for us.
But this text gives us reason to rejoice, leap in joyful hope, and shout with songs of deliverance! You atone for our transgressions!
The Psalmist wrote this Psalm in the days of Temple, where animal sacrifices were offered each day for sins. Yet, we know, Father, that these were only foreshadowing Christ’s own death. The blood of bulls and goats cannot take away sins, so they pointed the way to Christ who is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.
You atone for the sins of your people with the blood of your own Son, who was pierced for our transgressions, crushed for our iniquities, punished to bring us peace, and wounded for our healing.
So, we joyfully join the Psalmist and say, “Praise is due to you, O God!” May it be so in each of our lives and from each of our mouths, today and always.
In the matchless name of Jesus, Amen.
