I have seen so many people who have weighed in on the “Last Supper” parody at the Olympic opening ceremony. I have also seen some talk about how disrespectful it was to Christians. Sadly, I haven’t seen anyone say how disrespectful it was to King Jesus. That’s why it should be offensive to Christians. It insulted the Lord Jesus.
Yes, Christians, the world will sin and do sinful things, but that doesn’t mean we turn our heads and say nothing.
This act was on another level. This was a blatant act of blasphemy and disrespect toward God. This was spitting in Christ’s face and trampling on his sacrifice, which is represented in the Lord’s Supper, which was instituted at the Last Supper.
Please don’t post foolishness about Jesus being accepting of things like this. If you are going to talk like that, then I beg you not to speak on Jesus’ behalf. Go represent the false god that you have created in your mind and give him a different name.
Jesus’ sacrifice is not a get-out-of-hell-free card, so we can continue in sin. Christ’s sacrifice cost the Son of God his life. That is not cheap. Don’t cheapen it by making forgiveness equivalent to God overlooking sin. God does not overlook sin. Sin has either been paid for by Christ in your place, or you will pay for it yourself.
Jesus did not die for sin so people can go on living in it with no consequences (Romans 1:18-32; 6:1-2) Jesus died to face the wrath of God for his people so that those who repent of their sins and trust in him alone will be saved (Isaiah 53:5; Epehsians 1:7-8; Titus 2:14). The Lord Jesus died so that we who live would no longer live for ourselves but for the Lord Jesus who died for our sakes and was raised (2 Corinthians 5:15).
When the holy name of Jesus is trampled on, we need to say something. Jesus has died in the place of sinners at the cross (Isaiah 53:5; 1 Peter 3:18). He has risen again from the dead (1 Corinthians 15). He has ascended to God the Father’s right hand where he reigns as King (Psalm 2:6; Acts 2:36; Philippians 2:9-11). He will someday return to judge the living and dead and to tread out the winepress of God’s wrath (Revelation 19:15). The only escape from his wrath is to turn from your self and sin and trust in Jesus alone as Lord and Savior (Matthew 3:17; Luke 24:47).
Yes. Jesus receives sinners with open arms, BUT only those who come to him on his terms. As God, he has the right to set the terms for those who would return to him from rebellion. Trampling his sacrifice by mocking the Lord’s Supper, which represents it, will not receive his mercy. Coming to him as a sinner, acknowledging your sin, and calling on him alone to save you is the only escape (Romans 10:9-10, 13).
