“We do not know what to do, but our eyes are on you” (2 Chronicles 20:12b).
Father, I can so relate to this prayer of King Jehoshaphat. There are so many times that I do not know what to do. This is especially true when I have what feels like teeming hordes descending on me, like Judah did. The daily needs, temptations, and battles with sin are too great for me. Sometimes just thinking about it all is paralyzing. But, I thank you for this verse and the heart cry of Jehoshaphat. At a time when he was reforming the worship of Judah and learning to turn from his past sins, you brought a test for his faith. This was not punishment but gracious training.
Thank you for this truly transparent and desperate prayer: “We do not know what to do…” This is where I find myself so often. Thank you that this is the right place to be; helpless and uncertain in myself.
Thank you for the next part: “… but our eyes are on you.” In my helplessness, help me to immediately look to you in all the uncertainties. Actually, help my eyes to never stop looking to Jesus (Hebrews 12:1-2).
I may not know what else to do, but I do know one thing I must do: I must have my eyes on you. You know all things. You know what has been, what is now, and you know what will be. Not only that but you are the same yesterday, today, and forever (Hebrews 13:8). You are the one who is and who was and who is to come (Revelation 1:8).
You know the right action for me to take and the plan you have laid out for me is certain. “You guide me with your counsel, and afterward you will receive me to glory” (Psalm 73:24). I may plan my way with limited knowledge, but you establish my steps with eternal wisdom (Proverbs 16:9). You are the one certainty in a world of uncertainty. Actually, there is no uncertainty with you in control. You work all things according to the counsel of your will to the praise of your glory and for my good (Ephesians 1:11-12; Romans 8:28-29).
Hold my gaze by your grace and accomplish your good and sovereign will in me for your glory.
Amen.
