Prayer from Judges 1-2

Father, when we read the book of Judges, it is easy for us to be proud. We may look at Israel’s failure and think that we are better than they. How easy to say, “We don’t have unconquered enemies.” “We are not caught up in the ‘lowest and basest’ of sins.” How foolish of us!

How foolish to be blinded to the many enemies we leave undefeated. We are slow to mortify the deeds the flesh. We are slow to put them away by Your grace. We are so fast to go our own way, rather than trusting in You, the Lord our God!

Forgive us, Lord. Cleanse us! Enable us to turn away from pride and going our own way. Christ Jesus has given Himself to redeem us from lawlessness.

When we read Judges may we see it as a mirror. May we see what happens to a people who forsake God’s way. May we be warned from going our own way, and by faith fear You, the Lord our God, always.

By Your grace, may we continually look again to Jesus, the faithful Israelite, who lived and died for us. May we remember, it is by His work alone we are saved and have blessing. Amen.
