Obedience Is Better than Sacrifice – 1 Samuel 15

Lord,

How quickly we turn to our way! We are so quick to think that we know what You want. We think You are like us. Yet, You alone are God. You are to be feared, trusted, and obeyed.

Saul did not obey Your commands. He feared the people and obeyed them. Again, his fear led him to reject the Lord’s commands. His kingdom was torn from him.

Blessed be Your name that this was in Your plan to bring Your true King into the world. Even in man’s rebellion You accomplish Your plan.

Remind us that obedience is better than sacrifice. Warn us that rebellion is equivalent to divination, and presumption is equivalent to idolatry. Enable us to obey You by faith, even when people oppose us.

As Samuel grieved over Saul, make our hearts grieve over our own rebellion and the rebellion of others. In that grief may we look to Jesus who has been sacrificed for our rebellion.

Amen (1 Samuel 15)
