A Prayer from Philippians 4:19

And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:19 ESV

Father,

We all face the pressures and temptations of finances. Sometimes we face the pressure of having too much and the stewardship that requires. Indeed, in the United States we are often in that category. Compared to people in other nations we are insanely rich.

At other times we face the pressures of not being sure how ends will meet. We have all been in situations where bills and statements surprise us, and, Lord, we must admit this brings us great distress.

Father, enable us to be content in whatever situation we find ourselves. That is the context of the often misstated Philippians 4:13: “I can do all things through him who strengthens me.” You taught Paul the secret of being content with plenty and with hunger. Through Christ He could face all situations and be content. It is with the desire to be content in every situation in Jesus that we come with the following requests in His name.

First, we pray that You would teach us that in Christ we can face plenty and hunger with God-glorifying contentment. In Christ, we have all the riches of heaven, so we can face the situations and temptations of this world with contentment.

Second, we pray that You would remind us that in Christ Jesus You supply all of our needs according to Your riches in glory. You supply every need even when it does not appear like You do. You give us exactly what we need in the circumstance, and whatever You choose not to supply we do not need. Our flesh does not want to receive that, but may our spirits jump up to meet this truth with joy.

Third, enable us to never shun the gifts of brothers and sisters who are led by the Spirit to help us. May we joyfully, humbly receive Your provision for us through the hands and love of Your people. Such sharing is a fragrant offering to You, so may it be a sweet aroma to us! (Philippians 4:14-18)

Finally, please give us the desire to join in the joy of giving! May we be as generous to others as you have been to us with whatever You have chosen to give us. Through Jesus Christ may this be a sacrifice that is acceptable and well-pleasing to You!

As we face the pressures and temptations of finances, would You enable us by Your Spirit to face them with confident, joyful contentment. All our needs at all times will be supplied in Christ.

To You, our God and Father, be glory forever and ever.

Amen!

(Philippians 4:10-20)
