My Current Bible Reading Plan

In the last post I gave some suggestions and encouragement for personal Bible reading. I suggested picking a Bible reading plan, sticking with it, being flexible, and doing what works best for you.

I find suggestions from other believers helpful when developing habits. While comparison is not helpful, examples can be very useful. I want to share my current plan for Bible reading. I am sure that this will change over time. I am not a person who can keep focus for long, so changing up schedules and methods is important for me. This is simply my current method. Please keep in mind that this is a post specifically addressing Bible reading. There is more to my morning and evening devotions than what I have mentioned here.

I am a pastor, so my morning and evening devotional time is not my only Bible intake for the day. I look at these times as focused boosts for the rest of my study.

For my morning devotional time, I like to begin with a jumpstart of truth, Gospel perspective, and praise. I pick a New Testament book to read through, and I read one chapter each day. I am currently reading through Romans. I also read one Psalm. While reading I interact with the passage using the following:

  1. Character of God. What does this passage teach me about God? Then I take this truth and pray prayers of praise and worship.
  2. Confession. Where does my character and actions fall short as I see who God is? I then take time to confess these sins to God and accept His forgiveness in Christ.
  3. Identity truths. What does this passage teach me about my identity in Christ? I will take time to praise the Lord for these identity truths. I am trying to write these truths on a 3×5 card or in my flashcard app.
  4. Responsibility. In light of my relationship with God, what am I responsible to do in gratitude for grace? I will then pray for the grace to accomplish this responsibility in the day ahead.
  5. Edification and Evangelism. What is something from my reading that I can use to build up the body of Christ and plant seeds as I speak to the lost? I will pray for opportunities to do that, and I will pray for God to do His work in hearts.

Then in the evening I will read one chapter from the Old Testament (excluding the Psalms). I am currently working through the minor prophets, because I have not read through those for a while. I will also read the Proverbs chapter that will correspond to tomorrow’s date. For instance, I will read Proverbs 24 this evening, because tomorrow is September 24. As I read I will use the following to interact with the text:

  1. Character of God. What does this passage teach me about God? Then I take this truth and pray prayers of praise and worship.
  2. Confession. Where does my character and actions fall short as I see who God is? I then take time to confess these sins to God and accept His forgiveness in Christ. This confession is based on the Gospel identity truth that I read earlier that day.
  3. Christ in the Old Testament. Luke 24:44-49 teaches us that the Law, the Prophets, and the Psalms point to Christ. Does the text I am reading point to Christ?
  4.  Proverbs Principle. What is one principle from my Proverbs reading to take with me the next day?
  5. Edification and Evangelism. What is something from my reading that I can use to build up the body of Christ and plant seeds as I speak to the lost? I will then pray for opportunities to do that, and I will pray for God to do His work in hearts.

Remember, these are only suggestions. If you have suggestions from your personal reading time, please feel free to write to me through the “Contact” page.
