Keep Yourselves from Idols

As I got ready for the day the Spirit brought 1 John 5:21 to mind. It is a short and simple command:

Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen.

Why did John give this command? Keeping it in context, 1 John 5:20 gives us the answer:

And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life.

Since we are in God and His Son Jesus Christ, who is the true God and eternal life, why would we look to idols?

This also reminds me of John 6:66-69:

From that time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him. Then said Jesus unto the twelve, Will ye also go away? Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life. And we believe and are sure that thou art that Christ, the Son of the living God.

Being confident that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God, may we guard ourselves from idols.
